Ogee (the drawing)

I’m reminded of a cello’s heart.
— harp curves
— young body slopes
— architecture school, where I was introduced to this elegant, multi curved line, soft,  and of Middle Eastern origin.

It’s visual significance indicates a message of fullness and double fullness as in a young human face from 3/4 rear view.

A single one of these lines appears to lie flat on the page. Two of them (not too far removed) create an impression of volume or fullness.

This drawing, informed by the cutouts on a violin, tends to be phallic if it weren’t for the sparse use of straight lines creating more chiseled 3d shapes dancing side by side.

Writing about a drawing is like writing about wine: very subjective and questionable .  .  .

In the drawing I like the way the lines kiss the soft paper. Poetry.

Escaparates mios

My solo exhibition, Escaparates mios (My Windows), has been installed at the RollUp Project near Jack London Square in Oakland.

The exhibition is in the windows of the Project and resemble the display windows of a department store, thus my title for the show.

Part of the installation is on the Harrison Street side of the building and is a replication of my work studio in the Jingletown section of Oakland adjacent to the Oakland Estuary.

The second part of the installation is on the Third Street side of the building. This window features my monotypes on nautical maps and  watercolor drawings referencing my Life in Jingletown and its situation in the larger geographic of the World.

Everything S. Q.

The title of a piece I just made in my book: displaced and replaced clear packing tape (now yellowed and loose) had once wrapped a Pete Volkous “turd” (how symbolic is that, some forty years after grad school) when I had mononucleosis and wasn’t able to produce the typical huge and heavy Sculptures expected by my peers; so I painted Papier-mâché turds for Pete’s applause and my final grade in the class. These sculptures overlaid one another creating an oversize tic-tac-toe figure, laid out on the floor.

Today I removed the tape and pasted it into my journal, a 1973 sample of work that traveled, body and soul with me to be reformulated in Fornells, Menorca, Spain, in 1997, and now safely tucked into today’s Jungle Town Journal.

Absent this text the piece represents the ‘pure abstraction’ of my aesthetic rebirth-roots in NYC, schlepping across the United States of America to Texas, and then moving to the jumping off place in JingleTown California, where we’ve recently been informed that the building is in escrow.

What’s the point of living without dreaming?
