Gray Loft Gallery ~ Tracing Passages

My work has been showing in the exhibition, Tracing Passages, at the Gray Loft Gallery. The exhibition will be closing this weekend. As a gesture of thanks to all who have supported my work over the years, I will be offering a 10% discount on the work in the exhibition during the closing reception to be held that day. The reception will be from 5 to 7:30 PM with a special preview from 3 to 5.

DogThematic

My training was in the Hans Hoffmann era, at Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. I grew up loving Abstractionism but the rude awakening was that as Fine Arts evolved the American Public didn’t and unless there was something to identify. I decided in the late 90s that if I wanted to continue painting abstractly and sell my work, I’d have to adopt an identifiable subject matter. I chose “Dogs.”

I grew up with dogs and horses, But Dogs, painted via abstractionism, took the lead in what people were most likely able to identify: Bassett Hounds, Spaniels, Birddogs and Irish Woolf Hounds. I wasn’t able to bring myself to paint lap dogs or Pugs.

Gray Loft Gallery ~ 2020 Summer Salon

I am showing my work in the exhibition, Summer Salon, now being presented at the Gray Loft Gallery in the Jingletown section of Oakland.

"Butoh drawing is a dialog between Japanese Butoh* and the evolution of drawing, writing and thinking. The way in which images (ideas) of all sorts emerge, and how these images are deployed is the thesis of Butoh Drawing.

In theory, when a child begins to crawl, he/she is developing a part of the brain that will later read, write and think. Our experience with Butoh Drawing is that we re-live this childhood development as adults. We re-learn, and are able to re-express ourselves in a more fulfilling way."
